350 Eugene hosted “Plug in to a Clean Future” at the Campbell Community Center on April 25. The purpose of the event was to explain and engage with the community on what is being done in Eugene to help combat climate change.
The event started with songs performed by Ratie D, a Zimbabwean singer-songwriter, and speeches performed by Black Lives Matter activists about African women empowerment and racial injustice. The keynote speaker was interdisciplinary environmentalist Aimée Okotie-Oyekan.
After the short introduction, 350 Eugene explained to the participants how the event would move forward. The crowd was told to split into groups of three and each group was to rotate through the presenters, each presentation lasting 30 minutes.
Speakers included EWEB representative Juan Munoz, UO student Dylan Plummer representing the Sierra Club, and Danny Noonan of Breach Collective.
Munoz held a Q&A in which the audience was able to ask questions regarding the future of sustainable energy in Eugene. Then Noonan gave a presentation on the legal cases and future laws that can be passed on fighting climate change. Plummer wrapped up the speeches by discussing appliances you can buy for your household to make a difference on your carbon footprint.
