Donte’ Walker, the assistant men’s basketball coach at Lane Community College, recently organized the Lane International Basketball Showcase. The game provided a unique opportunity for international students to experience playing in a real basketball game.
The event took place at LCC’s’s gymnasium during a Thursday basketball class, and was attended by players of varying skill levels. The event according to Walker, “Was designed to be a real game experience for those who may not have a chance of that experience here in the US.” Some of LCC’s international students were listed as redshirts in the previous basketball season.
Despite having limited time, Walker managed to gather 21 interested students who were divided into two teams based on skill level and position. To add to the authenticity of the event, Walker had everyone wear actual game uniforms, provided by CJ Edwards, the current men’s basketball coach. He stated, “Wearing a game jersey during a pickup game is rare, wearing a full uniform is as rare as a unicorn.” Walker also served as the sole referee for the contest, which was treated more like an NBA All-Star game, with few fouls and dribbling violations overlooked for much of the game.
The event was live streamed on YouTube by Taya Ream who also helped set up the game and acted as scorekeeper. In addition, the school’s Ty the Titan mascot made an appearance, generating a buzz around campus and adding to the excitement of the event.
Local shops both on and off-campus — including Doug’s Place, J&J Java, Common Bond Yoga and Za Pizza Cart —donated prizes for halftime contests such as vouchers for ice cream, gift cards and even yoga classes.
Walker also brought part of his own personality into the game by incorporating Grateful Dead themed entrance music and naming the teams after the Fillmore East and the Fillmore West, described by Walker as “iconic venues the Grateful Dead played during the late sixties and early seventies.” He and his girlfriend even tie dyed some hats for the players. “We got a final photo of players with their new tie-dye hats, the Titan and myself at half-court! The tie-dye really represents the mixing of all cultures, colors, and people, every one unique in their own way but incorporates so much color and so much
possibility.”
The Lane International Basketball Showcase was a resounding success, thanks in no small part to the support of the International and Athletic Departments. Walker expressed his gratitude for everyone involved and hopes to continue the tradition next year, making it even bigger and better. “I have been receiving enough positive feedback that makes me very grateful for the experience and the opportunity to create something that promotes unity, equality, and love for everyone.”
