“The idea behind the learning garden is to provide food for students and also provide opportunities for working in an organic garden,” said Arissa Saliba, the LCC Learning Garden Specialist “Also just to provide a green space for students who just want to be outside or don’t necessarily have a place to grow food.”
The Learning Garden’s main priority when donating the food is the student food pantry and culinary arts department. If both the pantry and culinary don’t have a need for the food then the food is donated to Food For Lane County or Waste to Taste.
Saliba runs the garden and hosts a club on Thursdays from 9:00-11:00 a.m. “Even if folks dont want to come to the Learning Garden club or can’t make it, everyone is welcome to just come and hang out in the garden, eat lunch here, take a walk, its open till four everyday and it’s definitely a space for everyone to just enjoy being outside and looking at plants.”
