Is it really November already?
By The Torch Staff
Somehow it’s already November — just a few weeks left in the term, and the holidays are coming fast with Halloween already gone. Christmas and Kwanzaa are under 40 days away, Hanukkah and Winter Solstice are less than 30 days out. After our call for new contributors in our last issue, you showed up. We welcomed five new team members, and we’re feeling lucky to be growing. Since then, reporter Amy Miller has covered the recent LCCEA protests and more — you can read that coverage at LCCTorch.com.
Even with new faces, we’re still recruiting. No prior experience is required; we offer training and are simply looking for students who want to learn. We have work-study, freelance, volunteer, and co-op opportunities, and students from any major are welcome. Not interested in reporting but still want your voice heard? Send us a letter to the editor at torcheditor@lanecc.edu.
Oh SNAP — benefits were briefly disrupted and then restored. Due to the federal shutdown, some Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) recipients experienced delays in receiving their November benefits. Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek issued a state of emergency to ensure that full SNAP payments could continue, allowing benefits in full to be sent out on Nov. 7. At The Torch, we recognize that even full SNAP benefits don’t always stretch far enough. Managing Editor River Shepherd has compiled additional food resources in this edition. You can find his article on page 9.
New faces for Student Government Association this term. SGA has undergone several organizational changes, including merging the Student Activity Fee Committee and the Council of Clubs under its leadership. Keep an eye on LCCTorch.com for upcoming coverage of how these changes are shaping student life and campus leadership. With the new SGA team, The Torch also welcomes a new staff member connected to student government. Jess Farrell, who serves in SGA, has joined The Torch as our social media manager and as a reporter. To avoid conflicts of interest, Jess does not report on SGA-related news.
Board coverage is coming soon — we promise. We’re training a new group of reporters to take on regular board reporting duties. There’s been a lot happening, and we appreciate your patience as we continue learning how to do this work well. Full coverage of the most recent Board of Education meeting will be up soon. For now, check out our piece on a student who collected 38 signatures for his letter to the board at LCCTorch.com.
Corrections: The article titled Free Food Resource List: Main Campus, published in the Oct. 2 issue, incorrectly showed that the “Snacks and Scholarships” events take place in Building 1 Room 114. This is incorrect. The “Snacks and Scholarships” events take place in various locations, please see the Torch Community Calendar, page 4 and 5 this issue, for more information on upcoming Snacks and Scholarships events. Building 1 Room 114 is the office of Tina Hunter and does not have the capacity to provide snacks to the student body.
