On Jan. 27, Federal agents clashed with protesters at the Eugene Federal Building. The Torch reached out to Rep. Val Hoyle for comment on the situation, and she gave the following statement:

“Federal Protective Service agents were using pepper spray and pepper bombs against demonstrators at the Eugene Federal Building last Tuesday and we are seeing this play out repeatedly across the country — fomenting fear for the preservation of our constitutional rights.

Despite this, Eugene community members and nurses stood together to hold a vigil last night to grieve and honor the lives of Alex Pretti and all those who have died at the hands of ICE and CBP. I was unable to attend this vigil because I am visiting the Tacoma ICE facility where my constituents are being held. I believe it is critical we stand up to the Trump administration as they are seeking any excuse to invoke the Insurrection Act. We must continue to peacefully protest and continue to resist.”

Friday, Jan. 30 there is a nationwide general strike taking place. Local organizers have called for the general strike and car caravan events at Springfield City Hall, and the Youth Against Ice protest at the Eugene Federal Building, both starting at 2pm.

The Torch reporters will be on scene covering both events throughout the day, and we will update with pictures, video, and more information as the day progresses.
