The Lane Community College women’s basketball season started with a 9-1 record in the first 10 games. With an overall record of 14-4 Lane is dominating the majority of their games.
Only four losses looks great on paper, but with two of their losses coming from divisional opponents, the team is struggling in the southern regional standings.
The Titans took on Chemeketa Community College on Jan. 22 at Titan Court. This was a must-win game to set themselves apart from the bottom half of their division. Chemeketa and Lane came into this game with tied conference records of 3-2.
The first half was hard-fought as the Titans trailed by five points for most of the first half. The team closed the gap and had a one-point lead with just under a minute left on the clock. Unable to retrieve a defensive rebound the Titans allowed Chemeketa to score bringing the half to a close at 31-32.
Back from the break, the Titans fought hard, but fell short in the third quarter of the match. Failing to capitalize off steals and rebounds the women couldn’t gain the lead on Chemeketa all 10 minutes.
Lane’s deficit worsened slightly to 43-46.
Nothing but shouts of encouragement could be heard from the home bench as the Titans fought back and took the lead with nine minutes left in play.
With lock down defense and then a dagger for a three-point shot by #45 Megan Fossen, the Titans took back the momentum and ran with it. Chemeketa, with no other choice, was forced to take a timeout after nine of Lane’s unanswered points.
As the Titan’s lead grew, so did their spirit. The team erupted in cheers for their teammates after every bucket made. Fossen made another three-pointer that settled the game.
Lane won with a final score of 68-51.
The game proved the Lane Titans are a force in the Southern Standings.
