For many families, Thanksgiving is a time to gather over a meal and give thanks for all the positive events of the previous year. Last year our families had to have virtual gatherings to keep safe. This year, thanks to a successful vaccine rollout, many families will be able to gather again.

For some folks, though, Thanksgiving is a tough time. Food insecurity can affect anyone, especially during a pandemic. And lack of enough housing leaves many neighbors cold and alone during the holiday season. There are resources available, and options for giving as well.

The Lane Community College Rainy Day Food Pantry is available to all students. They are open on Tuesdays from 9:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. by appointment. Fill out this form to reserve a food box. D’ante Carter, who helps run the food pantry said, “We are ordering a large order of food for next week. About 500 lbs of food or a little more, in hopes that more students will pull up and get some free food.”  Food For Lane County has a form available for those who need access to food assistance, housing assistance, transportation, or several other available services. Acorn Community Cafe also has a food pantry and they provide free meals to those in need.

Volunteer opportunities abound and there are numerous  organizations accepting donations. Food For Lane County and Acorn Community Cafe are always looking for volunteers. Burrito Brigade is another non-profit that makes vegan burritos that are distributed to hungry community members. C.O.R.E (Community Outreach Through Radical Empowerment) is organizing a warm clothing drive. Drop-offs can be made on Monday Nov. 29 from 12-2 p.m. at the Park Blocks on 8th Ave and Oak Street. Lane Community College is also organizing a “Holiday Gift Giving Wall.” Students can pick a tag representing an LCC student from the wall, and bring back an unwrapped gift for the holidays. The Gift Giving Wall can be found in the Gender Equity Center on the second floor of Building 1. Gifts need to be brought back by December 9.
