The recent January ice storm that hit western Oregon caused many closures and road accidents throughout the week. The winter weather’s unsafe conditions meant that Lane Community College cancelled classes and closed the campus starting Saturday Jan. 13 and reopening Saturday Jan. 20.
The Torch reached out to several LCC Media Arts students and asked how the storm affected them.
Dustin Maxwell
Icy roads, frozen trees and unsafe drivers was the biggest concerns for me during the storm. I was able to get out of my driveway, but it wasn’t safe for me to even go to Lane. I eventually lost power and was unable to work on online work and had anxiety of a frozen tree by my house.

I live in the South Hills, it became nearly impossible to drive anywhere even in Eugene when you have no traction. LCC seemed very unprepared with the storm. I lost power for several days for me to do any work or anything I needed online. The expectations from my instructors was great when they understood our situation and pushed back our assignments and work.

It is hard for me to drive on icy roads and just not worth it. I live in Springfield and lost power for several days, even the traffic lights were down and couldn’t get to anywhere I needed to be. My son’s school lost power and wasn’t able to go to school for sometime so I had to take care of him during that difficult time. His school is still closed I had to take him to class with me the week I came back to LCC.
