The past week began with the Associated Students of Lane Community College Student Government in disarray as four seats turned over. When prompted for information on the four vacating senators, Vice President Leila Jebara declined to divulge their names but said “they were all great. They were all doing their work.”

“First, let me clarify that there have been no firings from the student government,” President Byrant Everett said. “The primary reason that these seats often open is due to personal reasons [or] resignation of the student involved.”

At the start of the weekly Thursday senate meeting on Jan. 30, there were only four senators, but by the end there were two new additions—Dela Patterson and Rin Kondo. Currently, there are six senators: Aime Nacoulma, Fadhel Abbas Albasri, Amber Coleman, William Tongsiri and the two newly-ratified senators.

Patterson is a returning student majoring in dance. Their goal is to create more clarity on what the student government is doing for the student body.

Kondo is majoring in psychology and speaks three languages—English, Chinese, and Japanese—which she wants to put to use during her time in student government. One of her goals is to work on connecting with many of the international students and helping raise their voices so that they are included with the rest of the student body.

Both Everett and Jebara spoke on how they are working on fixing the condition that the ASLCCSG is in.

“Currently, there are a few plans to fill in those seats including senators and staff doing class raps,” Bryant said. “We’ve been tabling at different events as well such as the Lane Resource Fair where we handed out over 40 applications to the senate during this event, and putting up fliers in different locations.”

Currently there are still two open senate seats and other various vacancies in staffing. The matter at hand is now how constant involvement in student groups is related to the lack of availability and ability to stay committed in holding an appointed role.

The senate has two open seats. The ASLCC student government also has a few other various vacant staff positions. The present problem is now pertaining to how steady involvement in student groups is correlated to their lack of availability or ability to commit long term to an appointed role.
For those who are interested in joining the student government, the elections will happen during winter term instead of spring term. Exact dates will be reported as they become clear.
