Jumping into frigid waters in the wintertime may sound like something out of the ordinary, but it has become an annual event held across the nation. Known as the Polar Bear Plunge, participants jump into freezing cold water to raise awareness and drive donations for the thousands of athletes involved in the Special Olympics.
For those who are unable to take the plunge, participants can also opt to be involved in the 5k and 10k runs or walks. The organization also offers the ability to raise money and plunge from home for those who are hesitant and choose not to attend in person.
In Eugene, the event will be held at the Maurie Jacobs City Park Saturday, Feb 19, 2022. Check-in for the 5k and 10k open at 8:30 a.m., and the event starts at 9:30 a.m.. For the plunge, check-in opens at 9 a.m. and starts at 11 a.m..
Companion events will be taking place in several locations across the state: Coffenbury Lake, Illahe Hills Country Club, Riverbend Park, Rogue Valley Country Club, Crystal Lake Sports Park, and Willamette Park.
