Club members Arissa, El, and Claire at the bake sale.

The Learning Garden recently had its bake sale with its baked treats made from ingredients grown and prepared by students. The bake sale which is one of the clubs special events held to bring more exposure to the learning garden had baked goods such as carrot cake, sweet potato pie, apple muffins and herbed biscuits and gravy.

The bake sale had items including apple muffins and sweet potato pie.

The money earned goes straight back into maintaining the garden and hopes the recent event will inspire students to check out the club and join as Like many other clubs and centers, COVID-19 had caused a dip in membership. he club is worried that many students are not aware of the club or are too intimidated to visit due to the club’s location being somewhat out of the way in comparison to other clubs being located next to Lot D near Building 26. The bake sale may have ended. However the Learning Garden is still very much active on campus.

The learning garden is an acre-sized organic garden which can be found behind the childcare center on LCC’s main campus. They meet every Thursday from 9 a.m.- 11 a.m. with volunteer hours held on Mondays from 9 a.m.- 3 p.m. Students, staff and the public are welcome to work. The garden grows a range of fruits, vegetables and native plants which are primarily used to stock the student food pantry.

The club is currently very busy this winter. After winter break the new compost pile system will be finished and they are currently working on a new sign. The club has plenty of work to do to prepare for spring, so for students who are interested now is the perfect time to join and be part of the foundation of next summer’s big harvest. The learning garden extends a hand and green thumb for students, staff and anybody to learn new skills, work on projects, or even just pull weeds and hang out.
