The MatchBox 6/4

By The Torch Staff

Bye for now? See you in fall… or maybe even summer.

That’s all, folks — for now. The Torch is wrapping up what might be its strongest year in recent memory. We’re back in print (yes, actual paper), and we’re not slowing down. We’re keeping the flame alive this summer — maybe even with a surprise print edition — and definitely online. So don’t shelve us just yet. And hey, grads: just because you’re walking across that stage doesn’t mean you’re off the hook. The Denali still wants your voice. Your connection to LCC doesn’t end with a diploma. Stay connected.

Who’s who, and what’s in a name? Lately, The Torch’s editor-in-chief Kat Tabor and managing editor River Shepherd have been getting confused for one another — and at least one person thought they were one in the same (we won’t name names, don’t worry)! Apparently they’d never seen both editors in the same place twice (sort of a Peter Parker vs. Spiderman situation?). Or, maybe people simply don’t know the difference between the two roles, which is understandable.

Editor in chief Kat Tabor uses she/they pronouns and has pink hair. Tabor’s job as editor-in-chief means that you may see their face more often, simply because the EOC is literally the face of the newspaper — representing The Torch at tabling events, in interviews with other news organizations, communicating with the public, etc.

Managing editor River Shepherd uses he/him pronouns, and has green(ish) hair. Shepherd’s job description means you may not see his face as often, but he’s writing a lot of emails, doing a lot of communication and management behind the scenes. Shepherd is also managing The Torch’s LCC events calendar, both the online Google-based and printed edition. Got an event? Send it to torch@lanecc.edu

Yes, dual enrollment is a thing. And just to clear up any confusion — our Editor-in-Chief, Kat Tabor (yes, the one with the pink hair), will be sticking around LCC for another year. She’s currently finishing up an additional degree and is actively enrolled at both Lane Community College and the University of Oregon. That said, we do have a member of our team walking the stage this year: our brilliant designer, Amy Prince. Congratulations Amy!

Got something to say? We want to hear it. Whether it’s a hot take, a heartfelt shout-out, or something that’s been bugging you all term, send it our way at torcheditor@lanecc.edu.  Letters to the editor aren’t just for cranky uncles (though we welcome those, too).  All we ask is that you keep it respectful and aim to spark change, not hate. Got something cool coming up? A club event, open mic, art show, pop-up, protest, or pancake breakfast? If it’s happening on or around campus, we want to help get the word out. Email torch@lanecc.edu and we’ll add it to our community calendar — online and in print. Free publicity? Yes, please.

As we like to say: If you’ve got a story, let us tell it. Or at least help you say it in 500 words or less.

Join us in the summer or fall terms! Are you curious about what it’s like to be a reporter, graphic designer, photographer, photojournalist, social media coordinator, marketing or any other facet of journalism or media arts? The Torch would love to talk to you about joining our team in either the summer or fall terms! We have positions available for co-op internships, work study, and also have some limited stipend positions available. Contact torcheditor@lanecc.edu for more information.

Stay weird. Stay passionate. We’ll catch you soon — maybe sooner than you think. And if you’re looking for your place in student media, we hope it’s with us.
