Tuesday, Apr.23, The BSU (Black Student Union) hosted a luncheon with LCC’s President Stephanie Bulger. Several students attending, members and non-members, had the opportunity to speak with Pres. Bulger in a comfortable question and answer session with a free lunch catered by Irie Jamaican Kitchen.

Pres. Bulger began with an introduction of herself, with her educational background originating in Michigan, establishing four colleges in Michigan accredited to Pres. Bulger. Speaking of her vision for innovation and cooperation at Lane, she emphasized her background with online/distance learning. There has been a 8.2% growth in enrollment since Pres. Bulger has been here at LCC. Topics such as learning styles with online courses, and the introduction of new methods of registration in the upcoming terms will be available soon, and the need of using press releases and posters/flyers as a platform to also advertise BSU meetings and events, were discussed.

Also in attendance was Carl Yeh, Dean of Student Engagement, Dr. Lawrence Rasheed, BSU Faculty Advisor, and Coleman Joyce, Vice Pres. of Student Affairs, who also spoke of the challenges and differences in approaches to online learning, asynchronous learning, and hybrid classes. The consensus of hoping to establish a comfortable and social community for African American students at LCC was an issue that students spoke on and largely agreed with. Before leaving, Pres. Bulger hoped to be invited to another luncheon hosted by the BSU and other student clubs and associations. BSU meeting times are Tues. @ 12-2, Multicultural Ctr conference room.
