Wait, LCC Has Dorms?

Titan Court, in downtown Eugene, provides housing and a dorm culture

When thinking of the quintessential college experience, being surrounded by peers is up there, not only at school but in daily life. At a typical commuter community college, there is no student housing offered. Lane Community College has Titan Court, its version of dorms.

Augustus Schrankel is a 22-year-old originally from Hood River, Oregon. He moved to Eugene four years ago and immediately started working at Titan Court as a building attendant. Working at Titan Court gives you rent benefits; as long as you work the quota hours, your rent is covered.

The building is the other half of the college’s administrative offices downtown. “The location is awesome, the bus stop is right here, the concert venues are close too,” Schrankel says of how he liked the location of Titan Court.

The positive dorm culture is prominent at Titan Court — there is a pool table, along with a lounge and a mini arcade for socializing. If you’re looking to study, there are multiple study rooms where you can have group study or cram for finals. There are also monthly seasonal events like an upcoming BBQ.

Schrankel helps set those up, along with helping out with the international program that has bloomed as of late. “The international program wasn’t here when I first moved, but it has become a great program.”

Schrankel noted the international study abroad program that gives foreign exchange students a centralized home when they are in the U.S. Schrankel says, “Having many cultures together gives you the opportunity to be more open and learn about other cultures; that aspect of the dorms is cool.”

After seeing lots of students living on their own for the first time, Schrankel’s advice is to “Figure out what your mom did for you and learn it.” Basics like shower curtains and cleaning supplies are things he recommends to double-check that you have. Setting aside enough time for school is also something he touched on. The place comes fully furnished and with appliances, and for Schrankel, “it’s all good, haven’t had any problems”.

Schrankel graduated from LCC and now attends the University of Oregon, where he is majoring in history. When he is not working or at school, Schrankel likes playing guitar and listening to music, both live and digitally. The WOW Hall and McDonald Theatre are some of his favorite venues; both are within four blocks of Titan Court. If you want to meet like-minded peers like Schrankel, consider Titan Court as a housing option.
