This Thursday on Nov. 30, Lane Community College will host the Fall Choir Concert at 7:30 p.m. in Ragozzino Hall on the Main Campus.

The Lane Chamber and Concert Choir will be joined by the Sheldon High School Varsity Choir to showcase music from various cultures including works in English, German, Latin, Arabic and Hebrew.

“Learning another culture’s music gives insight into that culture and is a wonderful way to experience and build a bridge in yourself to understanding that culture,” Director of Choral Activities and music teacher at LCC Matthew Svoboda said.

Svoboda has been at the music program at LCC for 17 years and works with various groups to refine and expose students to a wide array of musical genres.

The Chamber Choir specializes specifically in a cappella choral music, which is a method of singing without the use of instruments. They focus on music from the Medieval period to the present.

The Concert Choir also performs a wide range of music from various genres including folk and pop.

Students taking the choir class meet three times a week where they join together in their passion for music.

“I think it’s a very special program…we’re all very close so it’s a close community,” second year music student James Nolte said.

Students undergoing the program speak highly of the classes and the teachers who facilitate the student’s growth, experience and talent.

“The teachers are so personal. They’ll meet you where you are, which is so unique and special … This is possibly the best music program in the state and if people are looking into getting into music they should start here, because it’s going to set you up really well,” second year music student Anne Ferguson said.

There are a lot of different kinds of music we all sing. We have an arrangement of the picture book good night moon. The most important part is sounding good as a group and building good relationships with everyone part of the choir. Ava Renich said.

I keep doing choir because I love it and this is my passion and I enjoy the feeling singing with others. Memorizing each song is the biggest challenge for me. Dakota Harris said.

Entry for the concert is free, however donations are always appreciated. All proceeds for the concert will go to student scholarships.
