Lane Community College’s Black Student Union panel The Big Lie: Countering the Narrative of the Political Fiat of Critical Race Theory will attempt to dispel misinformation and set the record straight on what CRT is.

Critical Race Theory has been the education buzzword of the past year. School boards across the country have been inundated with demands from parents to stop the teaching of critical race theory to their children.

Lane’s Black Student Union will be hosting a panel discussion on Dec. 6 at 5:00 p.m. to address the myths around CRT. The panel will be facilitated by Dr. Lawrence Rasheed and will include the insight of Dr. Marvin Lynn, Dr. Jamel Donnor, and doctoral student Vania Blaiklock.

Dr. Marvin Lynn is a professor at Portland State University and is a leading expert on CRT in education. He stated, “We will be discussing the history and origins of Critical Race Theory. We will also be unpacking the highly politicized disinformation campaign that has brought Critical Race Theory into public view.”

Dr. Jamel Donnor is an associate professor of Education at William & Mary. “In terms of what the panel will cover, broadly speaking, we intend to dispel the myths and misconceptions surrounding critical race theory, most notably that it is supposedly anti-white people, which is an outright lie. We will also discuss what CRT can teach everyone in America across a continuum of positionalities.”

American studies PhD student Vania Blaiklock expanded, “As far as the panel goes, I believe that our focus will be to tackle misunderstandings surrounding critical race theory, especially the more polarizing myths – such as it teaches white children to hate themselves or that it operates as a form of discrimination based on skin color. “
