The Director of Student Engagement leaves LCC under mysterious circumstances

By: Editorial Staff

With the Associated Students of Lane Community College Student Government elections commencing next week through March 6 at 5:00 p.m., The Torch is sticking with its motto of “telling stories that matter.”

On Feb. 6, The Torch was presented with a tip that Donyel Hill — Lane Community College’s Director of Student Engagement, the position that oversees clubs and both ASLCC and the Student Activity Fee Committee — was expected to “quit at anytime.”

Hill was hired in January 2019 to the position. It was an integrated one that, in years prior, had been compartmentalized with the roles and responsibilities going to several individuals.

Following this tip, a member of our staff went to Hill’s office. It was found dark, the door locked and Hill’s name plate removed from next to the door.

That same day, as a result of an effort to reach Hill for comment, it was confirmed by yet another anonymous source that not only was he “no longer with the college,” but that he had been absent since the beginning of January 2020.

Nearly two months after the vacancy, Hill’s former position has not yet been posted through LCC’s Human Resources job bank.

The Torch directly reached out to Hill then through a direct message on LinkedIn as his contact information was still listed with LCC. Our request has not been responded to.

On Thursday, Feb. 13, The Torch received another tip — on the basis of anonymity — that Hill had not quit but had, instead, been fired from his position. That individual also alleged that the cause for his firing was due to criminal activity.

While nothing — other than the fact that he is no longer with the college — has been confirmed, the situation still presents itself as a worrying one.

The position has not been filled or posted as available. This has, as the student body president Bryant Everett explained, caused several individuals to have to assume many of the roles and responsibilities Hill had.
